We ask for one thing: your email address. This page explains exactly what happens to it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

At a glance

We collect your email address and your current energy supplier. We use them for one purpose, which is to send you your invitation to AutoSwitch when it is ready.

We do not sell your details. We do not pass them to energy suppliers. You can ask us to delete everything at any time by emailing info@autoswitch.ie.

Who we are

AutoSwitch is a service operated by AutoSwitch Ireland Ltd, a company registered in Ireland. We are the data controller for the information described on this page, which means we decide why and how it is used, and we are responsible for looking after it.

Registered office: Venture Hub, 136 Capel Street, Dublin, D01 T2C9, Ireland
Company registration number: 819907
Privacy contact: info@autoswitch.ie

What we collect

At this stage AutoSwitch is an invitation list, not a live service. There is very little to collect, and we have deliberately kept it that way.

When you request an invitation, we collect:

  • Your email address. Required, because there is no way to send you an invitation without it.
  • Your current energy supplier. It helps us understand which suppliers our early members are with, so we know where the biggest savings are likely to be. If you are not with anyone at the moment, there is an option to say so.
  • The date and time you signed up. Recorded automatically so we can invite people in a fair order.

We do not ask for your name, your address, your Eircode, your meter number, your bills, or your bank details. If a future version of AutoSwitch needs any of that, we will ask you then, and explain why.

Why we collect it

To send you your invitation, and to tell you when AutoSwitch is ready for you. That is the whole purpose.

We also look at the list in aggregate, meaning how many people have signed up and which suppliers come up most often, so we can plan the launch. That is counting rather than profiling, and it does not involve reading individual entries.

We will not send you marketing about anything else, and we will not add you to a general mailing list.

Who else sees it

We do not sell your information, and we never will. We do not pass it to energy suppliers, brokers or advertisers.

Like any online service, we rely on a small number of trusted technology providers to run the website, store your entry securely and deliver your invitation when the time comes. They act strictly on our instructions, are bound by contract, and are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes.

If you would like to know exactly which companies these are, just ask and we will tell you.

Where it is stored

Your entry is stored in a database hosted in Ireland (EU). We chose that region deliberately, so that the personal data of Irish households stays within the European Union.

Some of our providers are international companies, so limited technical data may be processed outside the EU. Where that happens it is covered by the safeguards the GDPR requires, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision.

How long we keep it

For as long as you want to be on the list. We are not going to quietly delete you while you are still waiting for an invitation.

Your entry stays with us until one of these happens:

  • You ask us to delete it, which we will do straight away.
  • You accept your invitation and become an AutoSwitch member, at which point your details are covered by the privacy notice for the full service.
  • 24 months go by. At that point we will email to check you would still like to be on the list. If you say yes, you stay. If we do not hear back, we will delete your entry rather than hold on to it indefinitely.

If we ever decide not to launch at all, we will delete the entire list and tell you we have done so.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • Access. Ask what we hold about you and get a copy.
  • Rectify. Have anything inaccurate corrected.
  • Erase. Have your entry deleted.
  • Restrict or object. Ask us to stop using your information in a particular way.
  • Portability. Receive your information in a machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent. At any time, without needing to give a reason.

Email info@autoswitch.ie and we will action it. We will respond within one month, and there is no charge. Given how little we hold, most of these requests take us a couple of minutes.

Making a complaint

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first. We would rather fix it.

You also have the right to complain to the Irish supervisory authority, the Data Protection Commission:

Changes to this notice

AutoSwitch is early, and this notice will grow as the service does. If we change it in a way that affects how we use information you have already given us, we will email you before the change takes effect.
